A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO STARTUP INDIA RECOGNITION

Startup India DPIIT Recognition: Eligibility, Documents & Application Guide

Understand the updated 2026 startup definition, recognised business forms, innovation evidence, National Single Window System (NSWS) process, certificate verification and post-recognition responsibilities.

SECTION 01

What Is DPIIT Startup Recognition?

DPIIT recognition is an official acknowledgement under the Government of India’s Startup India initiative for eligible innovative or scalable entities. It is separate from forming a company or registering an LLP or partnership.

A registered business must satisfy the prevailing startup definition, including qualifying entity type, age, turnover, original formation and an innovation or scalability criterion. Applications are made on the government’s National Single Window System.

A DPIIT recognition certificate does not, by itself, grant tax deductions, government grants, procurement awards or investment.

SECTION 02

How Online Tax Filings Supports Startup Founders

We assist with eligibility interpretation, business narrative preparation and compliance planning so founders understand the official filing process. The applicant remains responsible for submitting accurate information on NSWS through its own account.

Eligibility review

Assess entity type, incorporation date, ownership history and annual turnover.

Innovation story

Organise credible details about the product, improvement, technology or scalable business model.

Application checklist

Identify incorporation records, entity information and relevant documentary evidence.

Post-recognition planning

Discuss certificate verification, statutory compliance and separately eligible incentives.

Online Tax Filings is an independent consultancy and is not a government-appointed Startup India agency or franchise.

SECTION 03

Who Can Apply for Startup India Recognition?

The official 2026 DPIIT framework covers qualifying entities incorporated or registered in India. Founders should check that their legal form is recognised before preparing an application.

Private Limited Company

An eligible Indian private limited company incorporated under the Companies Act.

Limited Liability Partnership

An eligible LLP registered under the Limited Liability Partnership Act.

Registered Partnership Firm

An eligible registered partnership, rather than an unregistered partnership or sole proprietorship.

Eligible Cooperative Society

A cooperative society falling within the categories recognised under the current DPIIT notification.

A sole proprietorship is not itself an eligible recognised startup entity under the current central DPIIT definition. Incorporation or registration alone does not guarantee recognition.

SECTION 04

DPIIT Eligibility: Age, Turnover and Innovation

Under the 4 February 2026 update, the standard startup recognition window is generally up to 10 years from incorporation or registration; qualifying DeepTech startups may be considered for up to 20 years under separate criteria.

The Startup India recognition page lists a turnover threshold below ₹200 crore for standard startups and below ₹300 crore for eligible DeepTech startups, considered under the applicable financial-year conditions. Review the latest notification for exact definitions.

A new entity cannot be treated as a qualifying startup merely because an existing business has been reconstructed or divided.

SECTION 05

Startup Eligibility Checklist Before Applying

Before drafting the recognition form, confirm that your registered entity meets the current official criteria and has defensible innovation or scalability evidence.

Gather accurate legal records, turnover history, ownership details and a concise explanation of what makes the business innovative. Note any changes in identity or prior business continuity.

  • The entity should be incorporated or registered in India in a recognised legal form.
  • The business should work on innovation, development or improvement, or demonstrate a scalable model with strong employment or wealth potential.
  • An entity formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business does not qualify merely because it has a new registration.
  • Eligibility must be supported by accurate records and the currently applicable government notification.

Thresholds and special classifications can change. Confirm the prevailing DPIIT notification before applying.

SECTION 06

Standard Startup vs DeepTech Recognition

The DPIIT notification recognises a distinct DeepTech category for entities meeting additional technical or innovation characteristics. It is not a label that every technology-enabled business can choose automatically.

Standard recognised startup

The ordinary startup eligibility criteria, including entity type, age, turnover and innovation or scalability.

Qualifying DeepTech entity

The special classification and extended age or turnover conditions under the 2026 DPIIT framework.

Technology and R&D evidence

Novel systems, scientific or engineering contribution, specialised technology development and substantiated claims where relevant.

Appropriate classification

Review the government’s DeepTech questions and evidence requirements before selecting the category.

DeepTech recognition is not automatic for software businesses, AI-related services or general digital operations; the official definition and evidence control.

SECTION 07

Documents and Details Commonly Needed

The live NSWS form and DPIIT notification determine the final documentary requirements. Before starting, founders can prepare accurate and consistent business records.

01 · Incorporation records

Company, LLP, registered partnership or qualifying cooperative registration certificate and relevant identification details.

02 · Business and founder details

Legal entity name, PAN where applicable, authorised contact details and incorporation information.

03 · Innovation write-up

A truthful description of the product or service, problem solved, differentiation and scalable potential.

04 · Supporting evidence

Relevant product descriptions, website, pitch material, technical notes or other documents requested by the current form.

05 · Internal verification

Check all declarations, dates, entity history and uploads against original records before submission.

Do not submit fabricated innovation evidence, mismatched incorporation data or copied business descriptions.

SECTION 08

How to Apply Through the National Single Window System

Startup India directs eligible entities to apply through NSWS. The applicant should maintain its own login, email and mobile number and submit truthful information.

  • Create or access the startup’s own NSWS account on the official government portal.
  • Open Add Approvals, select Central Approvals and choose Registration as a Startup.
  • Complete the legal-entity profile, innovation or scalability details and category declarations.
  • Upload the supporting documents requested by the live application and review every entry.
  • Submit through the startup’s account, track the application and access the digital certificate if recognition is granted.

Do not share portal passwords or OTPs with third parties. The Government of India does not appoint private franchises or agents for DPIIT recognition.

SECTION 09

Writing a Strong Innovation and Scalability Narrative

The recognition application should explain what the startup is building or improving and why the business is innovative or has meaningful scale potential. Specific, verifiable descriptions are more useful than generic marketing promises.

Problem and customer

Identify the market challenge, user segment and unmet need.

Solution and differentiation

Explain the novel feature, process improvement or distinct technical capability.

Scalability

Discuss repeatability, potential adoption, employment generation or wealth creation.

Supporting proof

Organise prototypes, product materials, pilots or other credible evidence where available.

An ordinary trading or professional-services business is not automatically eligible merely because it is newly registered.

SECTION 10

Entity Incorporation vs DPIIT Recognition

Incorporation establishes a legal business structure. DPIIT recognition is a distinct classification for qualifying startups. Different government portals and documents may be involved.

A Private Limited Company or LLP may be incorporated without being an innovative startup. Similarly, Startup India recognition does not replace incorporation, PAN, GST, MCA or sector-specific approvals.

Choose the business structure first on commercial and legal grounds; then assess whether the registered entity satisfies the DPIIT definition.

SECTION 11

Founder, Ownership and Entity Records

Maintain consistent legal names, registered addresses, incorporation dates, signatory details, ownership information and supporting statements across MCA, PAN, partnership documents and NSWS.

If the business has changed its name, structure or activities, review the current government guidance on profile updates and possible implications for its recognition status.

  • Maintain the certificate of incorporation or valid registration document.
  • Keep basic board, partner or governing-body authorisations where applicable.
  • Preserve innovation evidence and records of the business model represented in the application.
  • Record meaningful changes in legal identity, status or operations for compliance review.

Do not rely on a startup brand name when the legal entity name or registration details differ.

SECTION 12

Recognition Certificate, Verification and Updates

If DPIIT recognition is granted, the official digital certificate can be accessed and verified through Startup India or the linked government platform. Use the correct entity details and recognition number for verification.

The official portal provides guidance for updating or correcting recognition details, subject to permitted changes and required supporting evidence. Preserve the submission records for future reference.

Do not advertise your startup as DPIIT-recognised until the certificate is actually issued and its details can be verified.

SECTION 13

DPIIT Recognition and Income-Tax Benefits Are Separate

Recognition may be a prerequisite for certain startup-specific tax incentives, but it is not the same as obtaining an income-tax deduction or exemption. Additional entity-type, incorporation-date, business and approval conditions may apply.

Startup India maintains separate guidance for the startup income-tax incentive often referred to as Section 80-IAC. In 2026, confirm the applicable income-tax statutory references, forms and approval route before claiming a benefit.

A registered partnership or cooperative may qualify for DPIIT recognition without necessarily qualifying for every startup tax incentive available to certain company or LLP structures.

SECTION 14

Other Potential Startup India Benefits

DPIIT-recognised startups may be able to consider selected intellectual-property support, procurement facilitation, self-certification or ecosystem initiatives where the specific scheme rules permit. Recognition alone never guarantees selection or funding.

Intellectual property support

Explore applicable filing support or facilitator programmes subject to current scheme conditions.

Public procurement

Review whether individual procurement rules permit recognised startups to access relevant relaxations.

Incubation and mentoring

Consider ecosystem programmes and mentorship resources where separate eligibility requirements are met.

Funding programmes

Evaluate grant or seed-fund opportunities individually; selection is competitive and programme-specific.

Never describe DPIIT recognition as automatic grant approval, guaranteed funding or blanket exemption from business laws.

SECTION 15

Post-Recognition Records and Ongoing Compliance

Keep normal company or LLP filings, accounts, income tax, GST, TDS, employment and industry-specific compliance up to date as applicable. DPIIT recognition does not replace statutory registration or reporting.

Keep entity data accurate

Maintain a consistent registered name, records, website and authorised contact information.

Document innovation

Retain the work, product development and scalable-model evidence described in the application.

Separate benefits checks

Assess each tax, procurement, funding or IP programme under its own criteria.

Monitor scheme updates

Recheck DPIIT notifications, NSWS directions and certificate conditions periodically.

False declarations or misuse of recognised status may have legal and compliance consequences.
