A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO PAN SERVICES
This guide explains how PAN works, who may apply, which revised forms apply to new applications from April 2026, and how instant e-PAN, card reprint, corrections and identity verification differ. Online Tax Filings provides independent assistance; the Income Tax Department and authorised service channels control the official processes.
A Permanent Account Number is a unique taxpayer identification number allotted by the Income Tax Department. It is used across income-tax filings, TDS records and various financial or business transactions where quoting PAN is prescribed.
Individuals and non-individual entities such as companies, firms, LLPs and trusts can require their own PAN. PAN allotment does not itself register a business, grant GST registration or approve any tax benefit.
The Income Tax Department administers PAN. Keep the allotted number and identity particulars consistent across tax and banking records.
Online Tax Filings offers independent documentation and application guidance for individuals, new businesses and established entities. The appropriate assistance depends on whether PAN has never been allotted, a correction is needed, or a physical card must be reissued.
Our practical approach is to identify the applicant category, review identity or entity records, explain the official route and help prevent avoidable mismatches.
Review the correct prescribed form for the applicant category.
Check identity, address and date-of-birth or entity documents.
Clarify which existing PAN particulars should be updated.
Explain official acknowledgement, tracking and verification methods.
We do not issue PANs or act as the Income Tax Department. Official allotment and corrections remain subject to government or authorised service-provider processing.
An eligible person who has never been allotted PAN may apply for a new number when required for income tax, regulated transactions or business identification. Individuals, companies, LLPs, partnership firms, HUFs, trusts, associations and certain foreign applicants have distinct documentation needs.
Before filing, confirm that the applicant has not already been allotted PAN. Applying again for another PAN instead of using a correction or reprint process can create compliance problems.
Resident and non-resident applicants depending on their circumstances.
Companies, firms, LLPs and proprietorship-related personal PAN needs.
Trusts, associations and other eligible non-individual applicants.
Individuals or overseas entities with India-related PAN requirements.
A sole proprietorship normally uses the proprietor’s PAN; a partnership firm or incorporated entity generally has a PAN in its own name.
The Income-tax Rules, 2026 introduced revised application forms for new PAN allotment requests filed on or after 1 April 2026. The earlier Form 49A / Form 49AA references should not be used as the current default for fresh applications.
PAN applications pending on 31 March 2026 remain valid; there is no general need to start over solely because the form numbers changed. Existing PANs also remain valid.
Depending on eligibility, a person may use the Income Tax Department’s free Instant e-PAN facility or a regular application channel operated by an authorised PAN service provider. Corrections, reprints and status tracking use their own workflows.
Begin with the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and the current PAN application guidance of authorised service providers. Confirm you are on the correct website before uploading identity documents or entering sensitive personal information.
A free Instant e-PAN is not the same as a regular application for a physical PAN card or a data-correction request.
The Income Tax Department provides a free Instant e-PAN facility for eligible individual taxpayers who do not already have a PAN. The current service uses Aadhaar, a mobile number linked with Aadhaar and DigiLocker for supporting date-of-birth proof.
This route is not available to everyone. The published conditions exclude minors, people who already have a PAN and certain representative assessee situations. Where eligibility or verification fails, a regular PAN application channel may be appropriate.
There is no government charge for generating Instant e-PAN through the official Income Tax portal. Do not confuse this free government service with optional professional assistance.
The documents requested depend on citizenship, the application route and the form selected. Common categories include acceptable proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth, as well as the information required in the electronic application.
Ensure the applicant’s name, date of birth and communication details are consistent. Where Aadhaar or DigiLocker authentication is used, confirm that the relevant records and mobile access are current. Foreign individuals may need a different set of valid identity or overseas address documents.
Always follow the current document list shown by the authorised application channel rather than relying on an older checklist.
Non-individual applicants typically must establish the entity’s legal existence, registered or business address and authorised applicant information. Depending on the entity type, documents may include a certificate of incorporation, registration certificate, deed or another accepted formation record.
The PAN name should align with the legal records used for banking, income-tax registration and other compliance. A trust or partnership deed, company name or LLP record should be checked carefully before submission.
For domestic entities, revised Form 94 is the relevant new-PAN application category from 1 April 2026. Foreign entities follow the prescribed foreign-entity category.
PAN allotment and PAN–Aadhaar linking are different matters. Linking requirements and exemptions depend on the person’s circumstances, and a PAN can be inoperative where applicable requirements are not met.
Use the Income Tax e-Filing portal to check the official linking status and verify PAN particulars. If PAN or Aadhaar is incorrectly matched with another record, follow the relevant departmental correction or jurisdictional officer route rather than applying for a second PAN.
Check the latest Income Tax Department eligibility, exemption and linking guidance before giving a client a definitive conclusion about operative status.
A typical application starts by confirming that the applicant does not already possess PAN, identifying whether the person is an Indian individual, Indian entity, foreign individual or foreign entity, and selecting the corresponding current application form.
The government or authorised provider’s live portal governs accepted document formats and verification options. Avoid promises about allotment dates.
If PAN has already been allotted but the person’s name, date of birth, address or another recorded detail requires correction, use the prescribed PAN change/correction request rather than filing for a fresh number.
Documentary support depends on the requested change. For entities, a name or registered-address change may require updated statutory records. Verify consistency with Aadhaar, company/LLP records and income-tax accounts as appropriate.
A correction ordinarily updates existing PAN particulars; it is not a new PAN allotment. The specific change-request form is separate from Forms 93–96.
A person who already has PAN may be able to request a reprint or access a digital PAN record through an authorised provider or the available Income Tax Department services. The correct route varies by application history and verified details.
Losing a physical card normally does not mean a new PAN number should be requested. Keep your number secure and obtain a replacement through the designated official reprint service where eligible.
Understand the difference between PAN allotment, reprint, e-PAN download and correction so the correct service is selected.
After submitting a regular application, keep the acknowledgement or reference number issued by the relevant PAN service provider. Use that provider’s official tracking channel to check the request.
For a PAN already allotted, the Income Tax Department provides a Verify PAN Status facility to validate whether details match government records and whether PAN is active. Identity checks and mobile OTP authentication may apply.
Do not share OTPs or sensitive documents with unauthorised third parties. Verification status should be checked only through trusted portals.
Non-resident individuals and overseas entities may need PAN for India-related tax or financial obligations. Documentation, overseas address evidence, authorised representative information and verification requirements can differ from those for domestic applicants.
From April 2026, Form 95 is relevant to foreign individual applicants and Form 96 to entities formed outside India. A person’s citizenship, residence, and the legal character of the applicant must be considered separately.
PAN allotment alone does not settle tax residency, income-tax liability or treaty eligibility.
Frequent mistakes include filing a fresh application despite already holding PAN, choosing the wrong applicant category, mismatching spelling or date of birth, uploading unsuitable identity documents and using outdated 49A/49AA references for current new applications.
A careful applicant-type and document review helps prevent unnecessary correction cycles.
