A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO IMPORT EXPORT CODE (IEC)
Whether you are starting a trading business, entering overseas markets or updating an existing code, this guide explains IEC eligibility, the DGFT digital application, 2026 bank validation and ongoing IEC responsibilities. For regulated goods, IEC does not replace other licences or Customs compliance.
The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is an identification code issued electronically by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is PAN-linked and is used for trade-related identification in India. The code is generally required when a person or business imports or exports goods, subject to specified exemptions in the Foreign Trade Policy and Handbook of Procedures.
An IEC is not the same as company incorporation, GST registration, Customs registration, a shipping document or a product-specific import/export authorisation. It identifies the trader; separate laws can govern which products may be traded and what declarations must be filed.
The official application and update system is on dgft.gov.in. Verify whether an exemption applies before proceeding.

Businesses and individuals intending to import or export goods usually need an IEC unless they qualify for a notified exemption. That can include proprietors, traders, manufacturers, partnerships, LLPs, private companies and other lawful organisations. Applicants must use the correct legal identity and PAN details for the concern.
For exports of services or technology, the IEC requirement depends on the transaction and Foreign Trade Policy context; service exporters generally do not need an IEC solely for providing services unless seeking relevant Foreign Trade Policy benefits or covered by specific rules. Always assess the actual type of supply before applying.
Buying and exporting goods without being the original manufacturer.
Importing inputs or exporting goods produced by the entity.
Purchasing goods from foreign suppliers subject to applicable trade rules.
Services, exempt categories and regulated products require separate review.
DGFT ANF-2A recognises merchant exporters, manufacturer exporters and service providers as separate applicant categories.
The IEC application is based on the applicant concern’s Permanent Account Number (PAN). The business name and date of birth or incorporation information are validated against PAN records. Existing IEC registration under that PAN can prevent filing a new code and instead require linking, viewing or updating the existing IEC.
Business owners should determine which entity is actually contracting with overseas counterparties. An individual proprietorship and a separately incorporated company are not interchangeable identities. Avoid copying another entity’s name, PAN or bank details into an application.
Match legal name and relevant incorporation details with PAN data.
Select proprietorship, partnership, LLP, OPC or other correct category.
Check for an existing DGFT code before submitting a new application.
If the business structure or PAN changes, check the DGFT modification rules rather than assuming the existing IEC automatically transfers.
DGFT’s ANF-2A recognises a wide range of applicant structures, including proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability partnerships, private limited companies, one-person companies, registered societies, trusts, Hindu Undivided Families and specified other legal entities.
Eligibility to apply does not mean all businesses will have identical documentation. A company may need corporate identity details and authorised-person information, whereas a partnership or trust may need its relevant establishment and signatory records. The DGFT portal guides applicants through the applicable details.
Choose the actual legal form of the concern; mismatches can trigger validation queries or require correction.
IEC and GSTIN serve different legal purposes. The January 2026 DGFT ANF-2A includes a GSTIN field as well as a declaration for applicants who do not have GSTIN. Whether GST registration is legally required depends on the applicant’s activities and applicable GST rules—not merely on the presence of an IEC application.
Importers and exporters may also need Customs/ICEGATE processes, shipping bill or bill-of-entry filings, product-specific permissions, bank documentation, export-promotion registrations, and GST export compliance depending on the transaction. IEC does not replace those obligations.
Trade identity and Foreign Trade Policy-related registration.
Indirect tax registration and compliance where applicable.
Customs filings and trade-document handling.
Additional permits or certificates for regulated goods.
Prepare the legal name, PAN, registered or head-office address, active email and mobile number, and the firm’s nature of business. Depending on the concern, DGFT may request CIN/LLPIN, partner or director particulars, branch information, turnover details and import/export sector selections.
Use an accurate checklist for the specific applicant; not every field or document applies in the same way to every entity.
DGFT’s IEC module guidance describes establishment or incorporation evidence for specified entity types, evidence of the business address and bank account evidence where requested. Acceptable address evidence can include a sale deed, lease or rent agreement, relevant utility bill or another permitted document. The exact requirements depend on the applicant type and current portal flow.
If the address document is not in the concern’s name, the current DGFT guidance may require a no-objection letter from the owner together with the supporting address proof. Keep legible digital files and ensure the uploaded records correspond to the declared business details.
The 2026 ANF-2A is a reference format; the actual IEC filing process is online and paperless through DGFT.
DGFT Trade Notice No. 23/2025-26, dated 6 February 2026, introduced an NPCI-integrated bank-account validation workflow for IEC issuance and modifications. Applicants are instructed to declare all active bank accounts linked to the PAN and check that the PAN, account-holder name and banking particulars are accurate before submission.
A mismatch in name, PAN association, IFSC or account information may affect validation. Applicants should use genuine business banking records and resolve inaccuracies with their bank, rather than treating a bank-check failure as a formatting issue that can be bypassed.
The concern and linked accounts should be correctly associated with the PAN.
Use the firm’s correct bank account-holder name.
Check the account number, bank branch and IFSC accurately.
Declare active PAN-linked accounts as required by the current flow.

Use the official DGFT website, register or sign in as an importer/exporter, and open the IEC application route from the user dashboard. Review whether an IEC is already linked to the firm’s PAN before starting a new application.
The live DGFT portal, rather than a static form download, is the authoritative place to submit the application.
After issuance, the Importer Exporter Code is available electronically through DGFT. The IEC details should be checked against the concern’s actual legal and business information, and the electronic certificate should be retained with other trade records.
DGFT provides an online mechanism to view or verify IEC particulars. Share or print the certificate where legitimately required, but avoid posting PAN and sensitive banking records publicly. Status or processing queries should be resolved using the official dashboard/help channels.
A DGFT code confirms registration details; it does not itself prove that every product shipment is permitted.
An IEC ordinarily continues with permanent validity, but IEC holders must electronically confirm or update particulars each year during the prescribed April–June period. The annual exercise applies even where the core details have not changed: holders should confirm the unchanged particulars on DGFT rather than assuming there is nothing to do.
Missing the mandatory IEC details confirmation may result in deactivation. Maintain a calendar for periodic checks, correct outdated contact and bank details, and retain evidence of successful DGFT updates. Separate DGFT notices can modify the workflow, so verify the current portal notice.
Check IEC particulars during the prescribed annual update window.
Confirm the record online even if no details have changed.
Update contact, address, partner/director or bank details as applicable.
Check activation status and preserve portal confirmations.
The usual IEC annual confirmation window is April–June. This is a compliance window, not an application turnaround promise.
When the legal name, address, branch particulars, partner/director information, email or PAN-linked bank details change, review whether an IEC modification is required. Some changes can be validated electronically, while certain identity and constitution changes may require additional DGFT review.
If an IEC becomes deactivated due to a missed annual update, use the DGFT portal to complete the required correction or confirmation and check the activation outcome. Other suspensions, denied-entity concerns or legal restrictions are separate matters and may require substantive resolution.
Do not file a duplicate new IEC solely because an existing code appears inactive; check the status and DGFT modification route first.
IEC is an important foundational trade identifier, but operational imports and exports involve additional compliance. Goods classification, applicable Foreign Trade Policy restrictions, Customs declarations, overseas buyer documentation and payments-related records should be reviewed for each product and transaction.
Depending on business activity, exporters may also need GST export records, LUT or other tax compliance, an RCMC from the relevant export promotion council, product testing or origin certificates. These requirements are conditional and cannot be inferred from IEC registration alone.
Review HS classification and applicable trade restrictions with official DGFT/Customs resources before committing to a shipment.
Frequent issues include applying under an incorrect PAN, overlooking an existing IEC, using a mismatched firm name, submitting incomplete bank account details, choosing the wrong constitution, omitting authorised-person details, or relying on an old list of required documents.
Accuracy at initial application often makes later modification and verification easier.
An Importer Exporter Code is a DGFT-issued, PAN-linked trade identification code for relevant imports and exports. It is provided as an electronic certificate.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, issues IECs through its official online portal.
Not necessarily. Service and technology exports have context-dependent IEC rules, including cases involving Foreign Trade Policy benefits or specific requirements. Review your activity.
The January 2026 ANF-2A contains both a GSTIN field and an option to declare that GSTIN is not held. GST registration itself depends on the separate applicable GST law and activity.
Yes, proprietorship is among the business constitutions shown in DGFT ANF-2A. The application must use the appropriate PAN, name, address and banking information.
DGFT generally allows one IEC associated with a PAN. Check whether an IEC already exists and use the appropriate linking or modification route if needed.
DGFT introduced NPCI-integrated validation in February 2026 and requires declaration of active PAN-linked accounts. Ensure bank account details and firm name align with verified records.
Typically prepare PAN, firm contact/address and banking records, plus incorporation or establishment documents where applicable. The live DGFT form determines the exact attachments.
Register or sign in at dgft.gov.in, open the IEC application, complete the relevant information and attachments, authenticate and submit through the official portal.
IEC ordinarily has permanent validity, but holders must confirm or update IEC details electronically during the prescribed annual period to avoid possible deactivation.
DGFT may deactivate the IEC for non-updation. Use the official portal to complete the required update and confirm activation status; other restrictions may need separate resolution.
No. Restricted, prohibited or regulated items may need additional permissions and compliance with Customs, Foreign Trade Policy and product-specific rules.
